The West Michigan Crime Prevention Association was founded in 1979 with the purpose of contributing to the reduction and control of criminal opportunity and criminal victimization in West Michigan. WMCPA has co-sponsored a fraud prevention seminar for twelve consecutive years. The association also sponsors an annual golf tournament to raise funds. Members meet every other month.

Members of the West  Michigan Crime Prevention Association get together every other month, from as far south as St. Joseph and Niles to as far north as Cadillac.  In addition to speakers, reports are presented by representatives from the following organizations:

Crime Prevention Practitioner of the Year

Each year the West Michigan Crime Prevention Association accepts nominations for the Jim Hartman Crime Practitioner of the Year award.  This year's nominee, Rick Smiedendorf, received high praise for his caring and involvement in the St. Joseph community.Adhering to a philosophy of community-based policing, he is actively involved in St. Joseph’s school system and bringing various safety messages to the youth.  He is the President of the Michigan Community Child Watch Association, its area coordinator and supervisor of several local volunteers.
Each year, he organizes a multi-jurisdictional National Night Out event. In 2008, he added more programs including:  Teen Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) at St. Joseph High School and at Lake Michigan Catholic High School and an Adult CERT program.  He is also currently an active member, and former president, of West Michigan Crime Prevention Association and a board member of the Crime Prevention Association of Michigan.
